About the author

Jerald Dirks

Jerald Dirks

Dr. Jerald F. Dirks is an American Muslim author and former Methodist minister whose works on the comparative study of Islam, Christianity, and Judaism — published primarily through Amana Publications in Maryland — have made him one of the most consistently published English-language writers in Muslim-Christian comparative religion. Born in 1950 in Kansas, he was raised in a Methodist Christian family, served as a Methodist minister, and earned his Master of Divinity degree from Harvard Divinity School in 1974. He went on to complete a Doctor of Psychology degree from the University of Denver and worked for many years as a clinical psychologist.

Dirks embraced Islam in 1993 after years of detailed personal study of Islamic, Christian, and Jewish texts and traditions, motivated by what he described as an inability to reconcile orthodox Christian doctrines of the Trinity, the Incarnation, and the canonization of the New Testament with the historical and textual evidence as he had encountered it through his Harvard training. His books — written in an accessible scholarly register that draws extensively on biblical scholarship, early Christian history, and comparative religion — include The Cross and the Crescent: An Interfaith Dialogue between Christianity and Islam (2001), The Abrahamic Faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Muslims in American History: A Forgotten Legacy, Letters to My Elders in Islam, and Understanding Islam: A Guide for the Judaeo-Christian Reader.

Dirks has written and lectured widely on the historical and theological common ground between the Abrahamic traditions, drawing particular attention to the Muslim and pre-Columbian Muslim presence in the Americas and to the methodological tools that biblical scholarship itself supplies for evaluating early Christian texts. His combination of formal Christian theological training, psychological background, and conviction-grounded Islamic study has given his work distinctive credibility among English-speaking readers approaching Islam from a Christian or interfaith background.
