Imam Abu Ja'far Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Tahawi was an Egyptian jurist, hadith scholar, and theologian regarded as one of the foremost Hanafi authorities of the early classical period. Born in the village of Taha in Upper Egypt in 239 AH / 853 CE — from which his nisba derives — he came from a learned family: his maternal uncle was Ismail al-Muzani, the leading disciple of Imam al-Shafi'i. Al-Tahawi began his studies in the Shafi'i school before transferring to the Hanafi madhhab around the age of twenty.

He studied under more than three hundred teachers, including the chief qadi of Egypt and, later, the chief qadi of Damascus, and authored some forty works across fiqh, hadith, and creed. His Sharh Ma'ani al-Athar and Sharh Mushkil al-Athar are encyclopedic reference works on prophetic traditions and their legal implications. His most enduring legacy, however, is the brief creedal text al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah, a concise summary of Sunni doctrine that has been accepted across all four Sunni madhhabs and remains one of the most widely studied creedal works in the Islamic tradition.

Al-Tahawi died in Cairo in 321 AH / 933 CE. His commitment to grounding theology in transmitted texts rather than speculative reasoning shaped Sunni creedal expression for centuries, and al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah continues to be taught and commented on across the Muslim world today.
