Imam Zayn al-Din Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad ibn Rajab al-Baghdadi al-Dimashqi al-Hanbali was a fourteenth-century hadith scholar, jurist, and spiritual writer whose works on the inner life remain among the most widely read in the Sunni tradition. Born in Baghdad in 736 AH / 1335 CE, he migrated as a boy with his family to Damascus, where his father was already an established Hanbali scholar. He studied under major figures of his generation including al-Mizzi, al-Dhahabi, and most consequentially Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyya, whose spiritual and methodological influence on Ibn Rajab's writing is unmistakable.

Ibn Rajab is best known for two works of remarkable depth: Jami' al-Ulum wa al-Hikam, a commentary on the forty-two foundational hadith collected by Imam al-Nawawi and Ibn Rajab himself — universally regarded as one of the great spiritual classics of Sunni Islam — and Lata'if al-Ma'arif, a guide to the spiritual significance of the months, festivals, and seasons of the Islamic year. He also authored Fath al-Bari, a substantial (though unfinished) commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari that predates Ibn Hajar's more famous work of the same title; al-Dhayl 'ala Tabaqat al-Hanabilah, a biographical continuation of Hanbali scholarly history; and Sharh Ilal al-Tirmidhi, a work on hadith defects and methodology.

Ibn Rajab taught at the Hanbalite madrasas of Damascus and lived an austere, scholarly life largely apart from political affairs. He died in Damascus in 795 AH / 1393 CE. His writings continue to occupy a central place in the curricula of traditional Sunni learning, particularly within Hanbali scholarship and in circles concerned with tazkiyat al-nafs (spiritual purification).
