Ahmed Shawqi was an Egyptian poet, dramatist, and statesman widely regarded as the foremost Arabic poet of the modern era. Born in Cairo on 16 October 1868 into a wealthy family with mixed Circassian, Turkish, Kurdish, and Greek ancestry, he was raised in the orbit of the Khedivial court. He studied law and translation in Cairo before being sent on a royal scholarship to the universities of Montpellier and Paris, where he was deeply influenced by French neoclassical drama, particularly the works of Racine and Molière.

Returning to Egypt in 1894, Shawqi became the leading literary voice of his generation, serving as court poet to Khedive Abbas Helmi II. His outspoken opposition to British rule led to his exile to Andalusia in 1914, an experience that turned his poetry toward themes of nostalgia, pan-Arab identity, and Islamic history. After returning to Egypt in 1920, he produced his most mature work, including the religious poem al-Hamziyyah and the poetic dramas Majnun Layla, Masra' Cleopatra, and Ali Bey al-Kabir — works that pioneered the genre of Arabic poetic theater. In 1927 he was acclaimed by his peers as Amir al-Shu'ara (Prince of Poets).

Shawqi died in Cairo on 14 October 1932. His former Giza residence, Karmat Ibn Hani, has since been preserved as the Ahmed Shawqi Museum. His mastery of classical Arabic prosody, combined with a willingness to engage modern themes, shaped twentieth-century Arabic literature and continues to be widely studied and recited.
