About the author

Muhammad Abdullah Draz

Shaykh Muhammad Abdullah Draz was a twentieth-century Egyptian Qur'anic scholar, theologian, and one of the most rigorous Muslim philosophical minds of his generation, best known for his magnum opus al-Naba' al-'Azim ('The Great Tiding'), a sustained literary and theological study of the structural unity of the Qur'an, and for his Sorbonne dissertation La Morale du Koran ('The Moral Law of the Qur'an'). Born on 8 November 1894 / 8 Jumada al-Ula 1311 in the Egyptian Delta town of Mahallat Diyay (in Kafr al-Shaykh) into a scholarly family — his father was an Azhari scholar — he memorized the Qur'an in childhood and pursued his Islamic education at the Alexandria Religious Institute and then al-Azhar.

After teaching at al-Azhar, Draz traveled to Paris in 1936 to pursue doctoral studies at the Sorbonne, where he earned his PhD in 1947 with his dissertation on Qur'anic ethics — a comprehensive philosophical demonstration that the moral universe of the Qur'an constitutes a coherent, rationally defensible ethical system fully comparable to and in significant ways superior to the major Western ethical traditions. The dissertation, published in French and later translated into Arabic and English, remains a foundational reference in modern Islamic ethics. He returned to Egypt and was appointed professor at al-Azhar's Faculty of Usul al-Din, where he taught for the rest of his career. His other major works include al-Naba' al-'Azim, Madkhal ila al-Qur'an al-Karim, Dirasat Islamiyya, and a posthumous collection of his lectures and articles.

Draz died suddenly in Lahore, Pakistan on 6 January 1958 / 15 Jumada al-Akhirah 1377 while attending an international Islamic studies conference and delivering an address. He was sixty-three. His distinctive contribution was bringing rigorous philosophical method, comparative ethical analysis, and refined literary sensibility to bear on the Qur'an in a way that engaged seriously with Western scholarly conventions while remaining rooted in the traditional Islamic disciplines — a model that has continued to influence Islamic philosophical and ethical scholarship to the present.
