Mustafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti was an early-twentieth-century Egyptian writer, essayist, and prose stylist who occupies a foundational place in the modern Arabic literary revival (the Nahda). Born in 1293 AH / 1876 CE in the Upper Egyptian town of Manfalut into a family of religious scholars tracing its lineage to the Prophetic household, he memorized the Qur'an in his youth and was sent to al-Azhar in Cairo, where he studied for approximately ten years under leading scholars including the great reformer Imam Muhammad Abduh. Abduh's influence, along with the broader Egyptian intellectual ferment of the period, drew him from formal scholarship into literature and public writing.

Al-Manfaluti's literary reputation rests on a small but enormously influential corpus. His al-Nazarat ('Reflections') is a three-volume collection of essays drawn from his weekly column in the newspaper al-Mu'ayyad, addressing social, ethical, religious, and literary themes in a lyrical, sentimental, deeply moral register that captivated a generation of Arab readers. His al-Abarat ('Tears') gathers a series of original short stories and free Arabic adaptations of French Romantic works — including Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's Paul et Virginie, Alphonse Karr's Sous les tilleuls, and Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac — rendered into a musical, ornate Arabic prose that was studied as a model by aspiring writers throughout the Arab world for decades. He never learned French, working from prepared literal translations supplied by friends.

Al-Manfaluti briefly served as a senior official in the Ministry of Awqaf and the Egyptian parliament before his early death in Cairo in 1342 AH / 1924 CE, at the age of forty-eight. His sentimental Romantic style was later subject to critique by mid-century modernist writers, but his achievement as a literary stylist and as a popularizer of European literary themes for an Egyptian Muslim readership remains widely acknowledged. His works, particularly al-Nazarat and al-Abarat, continue to be reprinted and studied in Arabic literature curricula across the region.
