About the author

Imam Al-Qurtubi

Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr al-Ansari al-Qurtubi was a thirteenth-century Andalusian Maliki scholar best known for al-Jami' li-Ahkam al-Qur'an — universally referred to simply as Tafsir al-Qurtubi — one of the most comprehensive and widely consulted Qur'anic commentaries in the Sunni tradition. Born in Cordoba around 600 AH / 1214 CE, he received his early training in the rich scholarly milieu of al-Andalus before the Christian reconquest forced him, like many Andalusian scholars of his generation, to emigrate eastward.

Al-Qurtubi settled in Upper Egypt, in the village of Munyat Bani Khasib (modern Minya), where he spent the rest of his life teaching and writing. His Tafsir, completed in roughly twenty volumes, is distinguished by its extensive treatment of the legal implications of Qur'anic verses (ahkam) within the Maliki school, while drawing widely on hadith, grammar, qira'at, theology, and the views of all major Sunni jurists. He systematically refutes positions he considered deviations and engages classical and contemporary controversies with characteristic rigor. Beyond the Tafsir, he authored al-Tadhkirah fi Ahwal al-Mawta wa Umur al-Akhirah on death and the hereafter, and al-Asna fi Sharh Asma' Allah al-Husna on the names of God.

Al-Qurtubi was known for his asceticism and his refusal of titles and material comfort; reports describe him as a man who walked everywhere with a single robe and a cap, devoted to worship and writing. He died in Munyat Bani Khasib in Shawwal 671 AH / 1273 CE. His Tafsir remains in continuous print across the Muslim world and is consulted as a standard reference by students and scholars alike.
