More about A Commentary on Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyah

The Shamaeil of al-Im?m al-Tirmidh? is one of the most extensive and celebrated works on the description and attributes of the Messenger of Allah. The 415 narrations were carefully selected by the great Muhaddith to craft a vivid portrayal of the Prophet. Through this, a portrait of his blessed physical appearance, habits, worship, daily routine, spirituality, and much more is painted by those most beloved to him: his noble companions and family members. To aid the reader in extracting the maximum beauty and wisdom from the narrations, we have carefully selected explanatory gems from numerous classical and contemporary works. Some of the scholars from whom we have taken include: Abd al-Razzaq al-Badr, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, Al? al-Q?r?, al-B?j?r?, Ibn Hajar al-Haytam?, Abo Bakr Ibn al-Arabi, al-Nawaw, Ibn al-Uthaymin, al-Ghazali, al-Qadi Iyad, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Shawkani, Muhammad Amin al-Shanqiti, Ibn Abd al-Barr, Ibn Rajab, al-Qastalani, Ibn Kathir, Abd al-Rahman Al-Mubarakfouri, Ibn al-Jawz, Abd al-Muhsin al-bardr,  and others. Ibn Kathir said: Scholars, authored many titles on the description of the Prophet, some of which were dedicated books and some of which were chapters in books. Of the best books authored about the description of the Prophet is the book of Ab? ??s?, Muhammad b. ??s? al-Sulam? al-Tirmidh?, known as al-Shama?il.? [al-Bid?yah wa al-Nih?yah 8/385] ?Abd al-Razz?q al-Badr said, ?This blessed book is from the best and most beneficial books written about the character and description of the Prophet and its author made it such an excellent work through his structuring of it and the ?ad?ths he included therein. This is the reason why many scholars praise the book and consider it from the best books authored about this topic.?

About the author

Muhammad Ibn Isa al-Tirmidhi

Imam Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Sawra al-Sulami al-Tirmidhi was a ninth-century hadith scholar and the compiler of Jami' al-Tirmidhi (also known as Sunan al-Tirmidhi) — one of the six canonical Sunni hadith collections (Kutub al-Sittah). Born in 209 AH / 824 CE in Tirmidh, a town in Khorasan on the banks of the Oxus River in present-day Uzbekistan, he became blind in his later years, according to several biographical reports, and was buried in his hometown.

Al-Tirmidhi traveled extensively in pursuit of hadith, studying under giants of the field including Imam al-Bukhari — who became his primary teacher and exercised the greatest influence on his methodology — Imam Muslim, Abu Dawud al-Sijistani, Qutaybah ibn Sa'id, and many others. His Jami' is distinguished from the other canonical collections by its systematic attention to fiqh implications: after most narrations he records the legal positions of the major schools, identifies the strength of each chain, and notes which hadith are considered hasan, sahih, gharib, or weak — a vocabulary of hadith grading he is credited with significantly developing. His shorter al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyya is a celebrated collection of narrations describing the physical features, manners, and daily conduct of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Al-Tirmidhi was renowned for his piety, his exceptional memory, and his rigorous standards in hadith criticism. He died in Tirmidh in 279 AH / 892 CE. His Jami' remains a foundational reference text in Sunni hadith scholarship and is studied in traditional curricula across the Muslim world.
