A Commentary on al-Ajrumiyyah: ( Arabic/English)

Shaykh Muhammad Muhi al-Din Abd al-Hamid was an Egyptian Azhari scholar, linguist, and editor of classical Arabic and Islamic texts whose carefully annotated editions provided the standard reference printings for several of the most studied works in the Sunni curriculum of the twentieth century. Born in 1318 AH / 1900 CE in the village of Naballin in the Egyptian Delta, he memorized the Qur'an in childhood, then enrolled at al-Azhar where he completed the full traditional Arabic curriculum and earned the 'alimiyya degree. He went on to teach Arabic linguistic sciences at al-Azhar's Faculty of Arabic Language for several decades, eventually serving as its dean.

Abd al-Hamid's enduring contribution lies in his editorial and explanatory work on the foundational classical texts of Arabic grammar and Islamic studies. His four-volume edition of Sharh Ibn Aqil 'ala Alfiyyat ibn Malik — Ibn Aqil's classical commentary on the thousand-line grammatical poem — became the standard student edition across the Arabic-speaking world, with explanatory glosses (taqyidat) that explain difficult constructions for the modern student. His editions of Ibn Hisham's classical grammatical works (Sharh Qatr al-Nada, Sharh Shudhur al-Dhahab, Awdah al-Masalik to the Alfiyya), his edition of Ibn Hisham al-Ansari's al-Sira al-Nabawiyya, and his works on rhetoric (his commentaries on al-Sa'd al-Taftazani's Mukhtasar) became standard classroom texts in al-Azhar and across the Sunni educational world.

Abd al-Hamid also authored a series of original Arabic-language manuals that have remained in use in language curricula, and he supervised numerous editions of classical religious texts published through the Maktabat al-Tijariyya al-Kubra in Cairo. He died in Cairo in 1392 AH / 1972 CE. The breadth and reliability of his editorial work made him one of the most quietly influential scholars of his generation: behind the title pages of countless Arabic and Islamic textbooks studied across fifty years and four continents stand his patient annotations.
