About the author

Ibn Juzayy

Imam Abu al-Qasim Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Juzayy al-Kalbi al-Gharnati al-Maliki was a fourteenth-century Andalusi scholar and one of the leading polymaths of late Nasrid Granada — a tafsir scholar, Maliki jurist, hadith master, linguist, historian, and authority on the variant readings of the Qur'an. Born in Granada in 693 AH / 1294 CE into the Banu Juzayy, a distinguished scholarly family of Berber origin, he received his early education from his father and from the leading masters of the Granadan scholarly establishment, and was eventually appointed imam and khatib of the Great Mosque of Granada.

Ibn Juzayy authored major works across several disciplines. His al-Tashil li-'Ulum al-Tanzil is a concise but carefully argued Qur'anic commentary, celebrated for its clarity and its judicious selection of the strongest interpretations from earlier tafsir; it remains one of the most widely studied tafsir works in Maliki North and West Africa. His al-Qawanin al-Fiqhiyya is among the most lucid late-classical Maliki fiqh manuals, presenting the rulings of all four Sunni schools alongside the Maliki position. He also wrote al-Anwar al-Saniyya on the foundations of religion, Wasilat al-Muslim on hadith, Taqrib al-Wusul ila 'Ilm al-Usul on legal theory, and a celebrated work on horsemanship, Matla' al-Yumn wa al-Iqbal fi Intiqa' Kitab al-Ihtifal.

Ibn Juzayy was also a man of action: he died in battle on the field of Tarifa at the Battle of Rio Salado in 741 AH / 1340 CE, fighting alongside the Marinid forces of Sultan Abu al-Hasan against the Castilian Christian armies — a turning point in the long Reconquista that marked the beginning of the end for Muslim rule in al-Andalus. His son Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Juzayy carried forward the family scholarly tradition, most famously by transcribing and editing the celebrated travel account of his father's contemporary Ibn Battuta. The al-Tashil tafsir continues to be reprinted and taught across the Maliki world today.
