Abu Uthman Amr ibn Bahr al-Kinani al-Basri, known by the nickname al-Jahiz ('the goggle-eyed'), was an Arab prose stylist of the early Abbasid period, widely regarded as one of the foundational figures of classical Arabic literature. Born in Basra around 160 AH / 776 CE into a poor family, he was self-educated at the mosques and markets of Basra, attending the lectures of philologists and grammarians such as al-Asma'i and Abu Ubaydah, and acquiring over twenty-five years of independent study a deep knowledge of Arabic poetry, pre-Islamic history, the Qur'an, hadith, and Greek philosophy in translation.

Al-Jahiz wrote, by his contemporaries' counts, between two hundred and three hundred works — of which roughly thirty survive. His Kitab al-Hayawan (The Book of Animals) is a seven-volume compendium combining zoology, anecdote, poetry, and natural philosophy, often cited for its early observations on environmental adaptation. Kitab al-Bukhala (The Book of Misers) is a satirical study of avarice that remains one of the great works of Arabic prose, and Kitab al-Bayan wa al-Tabyin is a foundational treatise on Arabic eloquence and rhetoric. He moved between Basra, Baghdad, and Samarra, enjoying the patronage of Abbasid viziers and writing on subjects ranging from theology to politics to the characterization of peoples.

Al-Jahiz was associated with the Mu'tazili school of theology — a rationalist tradition prominent under the early Abbasid caliphs — and several of his theological writings reflect that orientation. He returned to Basra late in life, by then partially paralyzed, and died there in Muharram 255 AH / December 868 CE. The widely repeated account holds that he was killed when piles of his own books toppled onto him in his library — a fitting end, perhaps, for a writer whose life was so thoroughly given over to the written word.
