About the author

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani

Ahmad ibn 'Ali ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani was born in Cairo in 1372 CE to a family that traced its origins to the Palestinian town of Asqalan. Orphaned at a young age, he memorized the Qur'an by the age of nine and began advanced studies in hadith and fiqh while still a teenager. He traveled extensively across Egypt, Syria, the Hijaz, and Yemen to study with leading scholars of his time, eventually mastering the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence and the science of hadith narration.

Ibn Hajar served as Chief Judge of Egypt under several Mamluk sultans, holding the post intermittently for more than two decades. He also taught at the most prestigious madrasas of Cairo and supervised vast circles of students, many of whom became leading scholars in their own right. His mastery of hadith narrators (rijal) and his ability to weigh competing reports were considered unrivaled in his generation.

His magnum opus is *Fath al-Bari*, a multi-volume commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari widely regarded as the definitive explanation of the canonical collection. He also authored *Bulugh al-Maram*, a concise hadith collection on legal rulings that remains a core text in Islamic seminaries worldwide, and *al-Isaba*, a comprehensive biographical dictionary of the Prophet's ﷺ Companions. Ibn Hajar passed away in Cairo in 1449 CE, and his works continue to be foundational references in hadith scholarship to this day.
