ابراهيم أبو الأنبياء

Abbas Mahmud al-Aqqad was one of the most prolific and influential Egyptian writers of the twentieth century, a poet, journalist, biographer, critic, and Islamic thinker whose Abqariyyat ('Genius of') series of biographical studies of the Prophet ﷺ, the Rashidun Caliphs, and other foundational Islamic figures shaped the modern Arabic Islamic literary imagination. Born in Aswan in 1306 AH / 1889 CE to a family of modest means, he completed only primary school formally and was almost entirely self-taught thereafter, reading prodigiously in Arabic, English, and translated European literature, philosophy, and science.

Al-Aqqad began his literary career in journalism in Cairo, eventually serving as a member of the Egyptian Senate and as a leading public intellectual through his columns and essays. With Ibrahim al-Mazini and Abd al-Rahman Shukri he formed the Diwan school, which transformed modern Arabic poetry by breaking from the neoclassical Mahjar style and introducing Romantic sensibility, individual voice, and engagement with European literary traditions. His Abqariyyat series — including Abqariyyat Muhammad ﷺ, Abqariyyat al-Imam (on Ali), Abqariyyat al-Siddiq, Abqariyyat Umar, Abqariyyat Khalid, and others on Companions, Prophets, and major world figures — uses biographical literary criticism to draw out the ethical and intellectual character of each subject. He authored more than a hundred books spanning poetry, criticism, biography, philosophy, and studies in comparative religion and politics.

Al-Aqqad's writing on Islam combined defense of the faith against Orientalist polemic with a humanist literary register that made his books accessible far beyond traditional religious circles. He never married, lived an austere intellectual life surrounded by his enormous personal library, and died in Cairo in 1383 AH / 1964 CE. His Abqariyyat volumes remain perennial bestsellers in Arabic and have appeared in multiple English translations, securing him a place among the founding figures of the modern Egyptian Islamic literary revival.
