al-Abshihi Biography

Imam Shihab al-Din Abu al-Fath Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Abshihi was a fifteenth-century Egyptian Mamluk-era scholar and litterateur best known for al-Mustatraf fi kull fann mustazraf ('The Choicest Selection from Every Refined Art'), one of the most beloved and widely circulated adab anthologies in the later Arabic tradition. Born in 790 AH / 1388 CE in the Egyptian town of Abshawiyya (in the Buhayra province), from which his nisba derives, he received his Islamic education in Cairo and the Delta and was trained in Shafi'i fiqh. He served as a Shafi'i jurist and preacher in his home region, leaving relatively few traces in the biographical dictionaries beyond his literary legacy.

Al-Mustatraf is a sprawling encyclopedic anthology in eighty-four chapters covering an extraordinary breadth of subjects: the virtues of knowledge, the Companions, kings and statesmen, generosity and miserliness, the manners of scholars, the foolish and the witty, food and clothing, marriage and children, animals, song and music, supplications, dreams, eschatology, and much more. Each chapter weaves together Qur'anic verses, Prophetic hadiths, sayings of the Companions and Sufi masters, classical and contemporary poetry, anecdotes from the lives of caliphs and scholars, and popular wisdom. The work became a household reference across the Arabic-speaking world for centuries — quoted, copied, abridged, and printed continuously to the present day.

Al-Abshihi also authored Hubb al-Watan ('Love of Homeland'), a lesser-known treatise, and is associated with several shorter works in poetry and adab. His exact date of death is recorded as approximately 850 AH / 1446 CE, though some sources place it slightly later. His enduring legacy rests on al-Mustatraf, a book whose distinctive blend of religious teaching, ethical reflection, and entertaining anecdote made it one of the most popular books in the post-classical Sunni world and a still-vivid window into the literary culture of late Mamluk Egypt.
