Shawqi Abu Khalil Biography

Dr. Shawqi Muhammad Abu Khalil was a Palestinian-Syrian historian, Qur'anic researcher, and prolific atlas-maker best known internationally for his distinctive series of historical atlases — particularly Atlas of the Qur'an and Atlas on the Prophet's Biography — which combine rigorous Arabic scholarship with detailed maps, illustrations, and visual reconstructions of the geographical context of Islamic history. Born in 1360 AH / 1941 CE in the city of Beisan in Mandatory Palestine — his family displaced after the 1948 war — he completed his undergraduate studies in History at the Faculty of Arts at Damascus University in 1965 and went on to earn his PhD in History from the Academy of Sciences in Azerbaijan.

Abu Khalil spent his teaching career in Syria, beginning in secondary education before moving into university posts. He taught Islamic civilization and orientalism at the Faculty of Islamic Da'wah at Sheikh Ahmad Kaftaro Complex in Damascus from 1986 to 1988, lectured at the Faculty of Sharia at Damascus University from 1988 to 1997, and served as Secretary General of the University of Islamic and Arab Sciences in Damascus from 1992 to 1997. His atlases, mostly published through Dar al-Fikr in Damascus and translated into English by Darussalam, brought together cartography, archaeology, and classical Islamic historiography in a format that found an unusually wide international readership. He also authored al-Islam fi Qafass al-Ittiham ('Islam in the Cage of Accusations') and a long list of historical monographs.

Abu Khalil died in Damascus in 1431 AH / 2010 CE. His atlas series remains in continuous publication and has become a standard reference for English- and Arabic-speaking students seeking to ground their study of the Qur'an, Prophetic biography, and early Islamic history in the geography and material culture of the Hijaz, Iraq, and the broader Muslim world.
