Khalid Muhammad Khalid Biography

Shaykh Khalid Muhammad Khalid was a major twentieth-century Egyptian Islamic writer and one of the most beloved Arabic-language biographers of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Born in 1339 AH / 1920 CE in the village of al-'Adwa in the al-Sharqiyya governorate of the Egyptian Delta, he was educated at al-Azhar University, completing the full traditional curriculum and graduating from the Faculty of Shari'a in 1947. He worked as an inspector for al-Azhar's educational programs and as an adviser to the Ministry of Culture, but his lasting influence came through his prolific writing career.

Khalid's literary output developed across two distinct phases. His early writing in the late 1940s and 1950s — particularly Min Huna Nabda' ('From Here We Begin', 1950) and Muwatinun La Ra'aya ('Citizens, Not Subjects') — engaged contemporary political and social questions in a secular-leaning register and brought him both fame and controversy. From the late 1950s onward, his writing turned increasingly toward Prophetic biography, the Companions, and Islamic civilizational themes. His most enduring works belong to this later phase: Rijal Hawla al-Rasul ('Men Around the Messenger'), profiles of sixty Companions in literary biographical style that remains continuously in print and was translated into multiple languages including English; Khulafa' al-Rasul ('Successors of the Messenger'); Insaniyyat Muhammad ('The Humanity of Muhammad'); Bayna Yaday Umar; and Khalid ibn al-Walid.

Khalid died in Cairo in 1417 AH / 1996 CE. His distinctive contribution lay in writing Islamic biography in the literary register of modern Arabic prose — vivid, dramatic, emotionally engaged — which made the lives of the Companions accessible to a generation of Arab readers shaped more by literature than by traditional madrasa formation. Rijal Hawla al-Rasul in particular has shaped how Arabic-speaking Muslims encounter and imagine the founding generation of Islam, and remains one of the steady bestsellers of the modern Arabic Islamic library.
