Abdul Karim Bakkar Biography

Dr. Abd al-Karim Bakkar is a Syrian-Saudi educator, prolific writer on Muslim family life, child-rearing, and youth development, and one of the most widely read Arabic-language authors in the contemporary tarbiya (Islamic upbringing and education) genre. Born in Aleppo, Syria in 1370 AH / 1951 CE, he completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Damascus, his master's degree at the same institution, and his PhD in Arabic Language at the University of Punjab in Lahore. He moved to Saudi Arabia in the 1980s and held academic posts at King Khalid University in Abha and at Umm al-Qura University, eventually retiring from formal academic life to focus on writing and lecturing.

Bakkar's published output — more than fifty books — includes some of the most widely circulated Arabic-language guides to parenting and family life in the contemporary Muslim world: Mudkhal ila al-Tanmiya al-Mutakamila ('Introduction to Comprehensive Development'), the multi-volume Hawl al-Tarbiya wa al-Ta'lim, Tashkil 'Aqliyyat 'Ulama' al-Mustaqbal ('Forming the Mindset of the Scholars of Tomorrow'), Mudawalat fi Tanmiyat al-Tafkir ('Reflections on Developing Thought'), Awladuna ('Our Children'), and his series Mafatih al-Tanmiya wa al-Tarbiya. His work distinctively combines classical Islamic grounding with engagement with contemporary educational and developmental psychology, addressing Muslim parents navigating modern challenges with practical, source-cited guidance.

Bakkar is a frequent contributor to Arabic-language television programs on family and education, lectures internationally, and conducts training courses for parents, teachers, and youth workers across the Arab world and the diaspora. His books have been continuously reprinted by Dar al-Qalam in Damascus and other publishers, and a growing number have been translated into English, Turkish, and Indonesian — making him one of the defining contemporary voices in the Muslim parenting and tarbiya literature of the past two decades.
