Ahmad Zayni Dahlan Biography

Sayyid Ahmad ibn Sayyid Zayni Dahlan was a nineteenth-century Hijazi scholar, the Mufti of the Shafi'i school in Mecca, and one of the important figures in the late Ottoman-era religious establishment of the Two Holy Sanctuaries. Born in Mecca in 1232 AH / 1817 CE into a scholarly family of sayyid lineage, he received his entire education in the holy city under the senior scholars of the late Ottoman Hijaz, specializing in fiqh, hadith, biography, and the Arabic linguistic sciences. He rose through the teaching circles of the Sacred Mosque to become Shaykh al-'Ulama' (chief of the scholars) and Mufti of the Shafi'is in Mecca, the senior religious post under the Ottoman administration of the Hijaz.

Dahlan's published output is substantial. His al-Sira al-Nabawiyya wa al-Athar al-Muhammadiyya is among the most beloved and widely reprinted biographies of the Prophet ﷺ in the late Ottoman world, treasured for its warm devotional register, its rich coverage of the Prophet's noble qualities (shama'il), and its detailed attention to the maghazi. His al-Futuhat al-Islamiyya is an extensive history of Islamic conquests and dynasties, and his Khulasat al-Kalam fi Bayan Umara' al-Balad al-Haram remains a key source for the political and administrative history of Mecca. He also authored Asna al-Matalib in Hanafi-Shafi'i comparative fiqh and a substantial body of theological writing.

Dahlan moved to Madinah toward the end of his life, where he died in 1304 AH / 1886 CE and was buried at Jannat al-Baqi'. His students taught the next generation of Hijazi scholars, and his Sira al-Nabawiyya in particular remains continuously in print across the traditional Sunni world, widely studied as a classical seerah text in mosques and madaris from Egypt and Syria to South and Southeast Asia.
